Summary
The essay is a first attempt at examining magical seals in Sasanian Iran. Within glypography, these stand out as a separate category which can be subdivided into several typological groups some of which have yet to be formally recognized as “magical”. The essay describes and illustrates a large number of magical seals. Broader issues are then addressed. These include, among other things, magical imagery considered in terms of cultural and religious anthropology.
