The Foundation of the AAEI
The Association was founded in 1970 by a group of Paris researchers of Iranian studies at the initiative of Jean de Menasce, a Dominican priest and Director of Studies at the EPHE, Faculty of Religious Studies. Several meetings were held at his home in Neuilly-sur-Seine, which were attended by a number of scholars wanting to promote and develop Iranian studies in France.
The “Action Committee” consisting of Jean de Menasce, Henry Corbin and Gilbert Lazard held a founding member Constituent Assembly on 5 December 1970 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and adopted a first version of the statutes. Following this meeting, the chair of this new association was entrusted to Roman Ghirshman, Member of the Institut de France.
